Suspect identified after barricaded standoff at Massachusetts Family Dollar
Authorities have identified the suspect killed during a barricaded standoff at a Family Dollar in Spencer, Massachusetts, that left a police officer wounded, according to officials.
Authorities identified the suspect as Patrick Madison, 35. He was a Spencer resident, according to local reporting.
The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office said the incident began shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday when officers with the Spencer Police Department responded to a reported shooting at a multifamily residence on Main Street.
Officers located an injured person suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, and the victim was transported to UMass Medical Center. No information was released on the victim’s identity or condition.
About 12 minutes later, officers located a person matching the suspect’s description in the area of West Main Street, prosecutors said. Authorities said the suspect produced a firearm, shots were fired, and he fled on foot.
Prosecutors said Madison ran into a nearby Family Dollar. Officers evacuated the store and surrounding businesses and requested additional resources, including regional SWAT teams, negotiators, K-9 units, drones, and the State Police Air Wing.
According to the district attorney’s office, SWAT officers located Madison inside a closed bathroom at the store. An exchange of gunfire followed, resulting in Madison’s death and injuries to a police officer.
Millbury police said the wounded officer is a member of a regional SWAT team and was shot multiple times during the response around 7:40 p.m. The officer was transported to a hospital and is in serious but stable condition. The officer was not identified.
Madison worked for a Worcester Department of Public Works, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. He appeared in union social media posts and spoke before a city council meeting in 2019 about his experience in an apprenticeship program.
The outlet reported, citing internet directories, that the suspect lived at the Main Street address where the initial shooting was reported. Authorities have not released a motive.
