Washington College in Maryland placed on lockdown after credible threat
UPDATE: The Chestertown Police Department said at 9:52 p.m. that the campus lockdown has been lifted and normal operations have resumed. Police said a subject is in custody and no injuries have been reported.
Washington College in Maryland has been placed on lockdown after police reported a credible threat involving a known individual.
The Chestertown Police Department said Tuesday evening at 7:50 p.m. local time that officers were on the campus of Washington College following a credible threat made by a known individual. Police said the lockdown was ordered to protect students and staff.
Around 9 p.m., a spokesperson for the college told Kent County News, “We are treating this seriously, especially as this is the first day of school after winter break. We’re working closely with law enforcement, and we’re doing everything we can to keep our students and campus community safe, calm, and informed.”
Washington College is a private liberal arts college located in Chestertown, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The school enrolls about 1,000 undergraduate students.
Authorities have not released details about the exact nature of the threat or said whether any arrests have been made.
