Driver intentionally crashes into police department lobby in Massachusetts
A vehicle crashed into the lobby of a police headquarters in central Massachusetts, and the driver was taken into custody, according to officials. Police said the incident appears to have been intentional.
The crash occurred Monday at about 2:02 p.m. when a black 2022 BMW SUV drove into the front lobby of the Shrewsbury Police Department headquarters, according to police.
The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was taken to a local hospital with injuries. No officers, staff members, or members of the public were injured.
Shrewsbury police chief Kevin Anderson said officers on and off duty immediately rendered first aid. He said the incident appeared to be intentional but that police do not have a motive at this time.
The chief said the vehicle drove through exterior pylons, the front doors, the lobby, and into the dispatch area, where three dispatchers were working at the time. He said a training session had concluded in a nearby room about 30 minutes before the crash.
Anderson said the driver is a local male resident who police had previous contact with, though not since 2019. He said investigators and the district attorney’s office are reviewing the case and that charges are expected. The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Tuesday.
Police said the incident appeared to be isolated and that there was no danger to the community.
