Rep. Robin Kelly to file impeachment articles against DHS Secretary Noem
U.S. Representative Robin Kelly said she will file articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, citing the conduct of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the fatal shooting of a woman during an ICE-related incident in Minneapolis.
In a statement posted on social media on Wednesday night, Kelly said she has “had enough,” accusing Noem of turning ICE “into a rogue force” that violates the Constitution, separates families, and causes loss of life.
Kelly specifically referenced the death of Renee Nicole Good, saying the incident was “dangerous” and “impeachable.”
Renee Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen from the Twin Cities area, was killed Wednesday morning during an encounter involving ICE agents in Minneapolis.
Noem said at a press briefing that the confrontation began when protesters approached ICE agents returning from an operation after one of the vehicles became stuck in the snow.
Good was driving an SUV that appeared to be blocking the street when agents approached her vehicle, and an ICE officer fired after the vehicle began to move forward. Good later crashed into a parked vehicle and died from her injuries.
The Department of Homeland Security said Good “weaponized her vehicle” and described the incident as an act of domestic terrorism. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz disputed that characterization after reviewing video footage, saying, “Don’t believe this propaganda machine.”
Impeachment articles introduced by a House member are first referred to committee, where they may be debated, amended, or dismissed before any vote by the full House. A simple majority is required to approve articles of impeachment.
The effort is expected to face significant obstacles, as Republicans currently hold a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, making it unlikely that impeachment proceedings against Noem would advance beyond the committee stage without bipartisan support.
