US announces new strikes on alleged drug boats, search for survivors
The U.S. has announced strikes on five more alleged drug trafficking boats. Two of those strikes left survivors, triggering a Coast Guard search and rescue operation.
Search for survivors
U.S. Southern Command, SouthCom, said in a post on X on Wednesday that three boats were traveling as part of a convoy on Dec. 30. along known narco-trafficking routes and “had transferred narcotics between the three vessels prior to the strikes.”
SouthCom said the three suspected “narco-terrorists” on one boat boat were killed in the first strike. However, those on the other two vessels jumped overboard, “distancing themselves” before those boats sank.
SouthCom says it immediately notified the U.S. Coast Guard to activate search and rescue efforts.
According to ABC News, the Coast Guard confirmed the operation is underway and it has put out a signal to other mariners to look out for the survivors in distress.

It comes amid scrutiny of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Trump administration policies after U.S. forces killed two survivors of a September strike with a follow-up strike. Some Democratic lawmakers and legal experts say that move was a war crime.
New Year’s Eve strike
In a separate post on Wednesday, SouthCom also announced two New Year’s Eve strikes. It said a total of five alleged narco-terrorists were killed in that operation, three on one boat and two in the other.
The posts did not specify what waters these strikes occurred in, however, ABC News reported a U.S. official told them the Dec. 30 strike took place in the Eastern Pacific.
A Coast Guard statement shared with ABC News said, “On December 30th, the U.S. Coast Guard was notified by the Department of War of mariners in distress in the Pacific Ocean.”
Strikes add up
The U.S. has now confirmed at least 34 strikes in its campaign to fight narcoterrorism, with at least 115 people killed.
Meanwhile, the CIA has confirmed it was behind a drone strike last week at a docking area on Venezuelan soil that President Donald Trump said was used by drug cartels. It was the first known operation on Venezuelan soil.
