Trump, Zelenskyy say progress made toward ending war in Ukraine
President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said they made significant progress toward ending the war in Ukraine following an in-person meeting at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
The meeting took place at Trump’s private residence and club in Palm Beach, Florida. Trump said the discussions covered most outstanding issues related to the conflict and were followed by a joint phone call with European leaders, according to a press briefing.
“We had a terrific meeting. We discussed a lot of things,” Trump said. “I had an excellent phone call with President Putin that lasted for over two hours. We discussed many points, and I think we are getting a lot closer, maybe very close.”
Trump said he and Zelenskyy later spoke with European leaders, including France’s president, the leaders of Finland and Poland, the prime ministers of Norway, Italy and the United Kingdom, Germany’s chancellor, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“We discussed all aspects of the peace framework, including a 20-point peace plan that is 90% agreed,” Zelenskyy said. “U.S.-Ukraine security guarantees are 100% agreed. U.S.-Europe-Ukraine security guarantees are almost agreed. The military dimension is 100% agreed, and the prosperity plan is being finalized.”
Zelenskyy said Ukraine is “ready for peace” and that teams would continue working on remaining issues.
Responding to questions, Trump said several issues remain unresolved. “There are one or two very thorny issues, but I think we are doing very well,” Trump said. “This is not a one-day process. This is very complicated.”
Trump said land remained one of the most difficult issues. “I think some of that land may be up for grabs… but you are better off making a deal now,” he said. “Russia wants it ended. Everybody wants it ended. We want it ended.”
Trump said the leaders discussed the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant “at length,” claiming that Russia and Ukraine were working together on reopening it.
Trump said it remained possible that no agreement would be reached. “It’s possible that it doesn’t happen,” he said. “In a few weeks, I think we will know one way or the other.”
