Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes Northern California near Nevada border
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was recorded in Northern California near the border with Nevada, according to seismologists.
The earthquake occurred at 4:41 p.m. local time on Sunday and had its epicenter about 9 miles northwest of Susanville in Lassen County, according to preliminary information from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). It struck at a shallow depth of 3.3 miles.
Early information based on data from GlobalQuake indicated that strong shaking may have been felt near the epicenter, including in Susanville and Johnstonville, with light shaking possibly felt as far as Chico and Redding in California, and as far as Reno in Nevada.
A ShakeAlert was sent to phones in the area seconds before the earthquake, according to the USGS.
“We just had an earthquake here in Susanville but I’m okay,” resident Antonia Dominguez said in a social media post. “Haven’t experienced shaking like that in a while.”
Northern California sits along a complex network of faults where the Pacific and North American tectonic plates interact, according to the USGS. Earthquakes in and around Lassen County are often linked to faulting associated with the broader Sierra Nevada–Great Basin tectonic region.
