A child was killed and a security guard was injured in a stabbing at a school in the Moscow region after a minor attacked people inside the building, according to Russian officials. Reports said the attacker wore a vest bearing the phrase “No Lives Matter.”
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at an educational institution in the Odintsovo district, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee. Investigators said a minor stabbed a security guard and one student.
The child later died from their injuries, while the injured guard was taken to a medical facility. Officials did not release additional details about how the attack unfolded.
Investigators said a criminal case has been opened on charges of murder and attempted murder. A 15-year-old student of the school has been detained as a suspect, according to the Investigative Committee.
Authorities said the teenager gave a confession during questioning and described his preparation and actions at the school. Officials said a mock explosive device was also found at the scene.
Russian outlet Baza reported that the attacker entered the school with a knife, wounded the security guard, and was wearing a vest bearing the phrase “No Lives Matter.”
Baza also reported that the attacker was wearing a helmet with multiple inscriptions, including extremist slogans, and a phrase attributed to Dylann Roof, the perpetrator of the 2015 church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.
Mash reported that video allegedly recorded by the attacker shows him approaching students inside the school and asking them about their nationality before pursuing them. The Investigative Committee has not commented on the video or on whether such questions were asked during the attack.
