2 dead, multiple injured after shooting at Brown University
Two people are dead and multiple injured after a shooting at Brown University Saturday. Police in Providence, Rhode Island said early Sunday that they detained a person of interest, and an earlier shelter in place order was lifted.
Brown University President Christina Paxson said at a Saturday evening press conference that the two deceased were students.
Nine people are reported injured. Officials previously said eight people were wounded, but Providence Mayor Brett Smiley later confirmed there was an additional victim who initially left the scene. That person did not suffer a gunshot wound, Smiley said, but had received “fragments from the shooting.”
The first call to police came in just after 4 p.m.
The shooting took place on the first floor in a classroom in the Barus & Holley Engineering building. Multiple exams were scheduled in the engineering building from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the university said.
President Donald Trump spoke to the press following his return to the White House. He reiterated he had been briefed on the situation and federal authorities are involved.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives’ Boston Field Division and FBI are working the scene along with local authorities.
“This is the day that one hopes never happens, and it has,” Paxson said. “I really appreciate everything that the local law enforcement and everybody is doing to help find this person, make sure that we can be safe as a community.”
She added that the university has been in touch with the victims’ families.
“We will come together as a community, and we’ll get through this,” Paxson said.
