Elon Musk nabbed a $1 trillion pay package. What can you buy with that?

Shareholders recently approved a new $1 trillion potential pay package from Tesla for founder and CEO Elon Musk, which he can get if he hits certain requirements. What could money like that buy?

Several outlets crunched the numbers, and this is what they found.

According to Jerry Pacheco, president of the Border Industrial Association and executive director of the International Business Accelerator, 1 trillion dollar bills laid end to end would stretch for 96,906,656 miles — which is farther than the sun. In a column for KRWG from 2020, he said if someone were to spend $40 per second around the clock, it would take them 792.5 years to get rid of it all.

Clearly, if you want to spend all $1 trillion, you need to start as fast as possible.

With $1 trillion, CNN wrote, you get get every single car sold in the United States this year. If cars aren’t your thing, you could splurge on 2,000 “Jeff Bezos yachts” — with the outlet noting that they take about $25 million in mainetance every year for each boat.

With the endowments at the eight Ivy leagues collectively being about $200 billion, you could buy all of the universities five times over. And with Switzerland’s annual GDP at nearly $900 billion last year, you could buy that, too — if it was possible to buy a country, that is.

You could also purchase Toyota, Volkswagen, Stellantis, Hyundai, Ford and GM — but not Tesla, of course.

At Kiplinger’s, they calculated that you could get 5.6 million “typical” American homes using figures from the National Association of Realtors, which put the national median price for existing single-family homes at $177,900 in the third quarter of 2010.

At the current federal minum wage of $7.25 an hour, you could buy 140 billion hours of labor, Kiplinger’s wrote. You’d have enough, the outlet said, to hire all 2.8 million residents of the state of Kansas in full-time, minimum-wage jobs for the next 23 years.
