TX AG Paxton announces undercover ‘leftist terror cells’ investigations

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that his office is launching undercover investigations into groups he refers to as “leftist terror cells.” Paxton claims there are organized groups on the political left in Texas that he believes are engaging in and planning acts of violence, without providing any further details of those plans.
In a press release, Paxton’s office cited the Wednesday, Sept. 10, assassination of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, as well as recent violence at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers in Texas.
“Leftist political terrorism is a clear and present danger. Corrupted ideologies like transgenderism and Antifa are a cancer on our culture and have unleashed their deranged and drugged-up foot soldiers on the American people,” Paxton said in a statement.
Paxton’s office is using three specific incidents of violence to support its claim that there is a growing pattern of “leftist violence.”
Along with Kirk’s killing, Paxton referenced when a gunman opened fire at a federal ICE detention facility in Dallas on Wednesday, Sept. 24, killing two detainees and injuring one other individual. No federal officers were harmed. U.S. Attorney Nancy Larson said the suspect, identified as Joshua Jahn, 29, acted alone and wanted to target ICE agents and personnel.
Paxton also cited the July 4 attack on a federal immigration facility in Alvarado, Texas, when a group wearing tactical gear ambushed federal agents. Paxton said the suspects were “nearly two dozen armed leftists connected to various Texas-based Antifa-like groups.” Ten people were arrested, but the Department of Homeland Security did not officially link the suspects to Antifa.
Critics respond to announcement
U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., responded to Paxton’s announcement on X, writing, “I mean, this man has just totally lost his damn mind. It would be laughable if he didn’t hold a position of power and use it to hurt people.”
U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Texas, also criticized the move, stating, “It’s not undercover if you announce it…. What a joke.”
Trump’s executive order cited as foundation for probe
Nearly two weeks after Kirk’s assassination, President Donald Trump signed an executive order designating “Antifa” as a domestic terrorist organization.
Trump’s order directs federal departments and agencies “to investigate, disrupt and dismantle any and all illegal operations — especially those involving terrorist actions — conducted by Antifa or any person claiming to act on behalf of Antifa.”
“Antifa” is not a centralized group but rather a loose, decentralized movement of individuals with anti-fascist beliefs. Paxton said his investigations will build on Trump’s executive order.
“There can be no compromise with those who want us dead,” Paxton added in his statement. “To that end, I have directed my office to continue its efforts to identify, investigate, and infiltrate these leftist terror cells. To those demented souls who seek to kill, steal, and destroy our country, know this: you cannot hide, you cannot escape, and justice is coming.”
