5 injured in rocket attack on Baghdad airport
Five rockets struck Baghdad International Airport and nearby areas, injuring five people, according to Iraqi officials.
The attack happened at 7 p.m. on Sunday, according to Saad Maan, head of Iraq’s Security Media Cell, an official body under the prime minister’s office. He said four airport employees and security personnel were wounded, along with an engineer.
The official said the rockets landed inside the airport compound, at a water treatment station, near Martyr Alaa Air Base and near Baghdad Central Prison.
The launch platform was later found hidden inside a vehicle in an area west of Baghdad. Officers responsible for security in that sector were removed from their posts, and additional security measures were ordered around the targeted sites.
No group has claimed responsibility, although groups operating under the Islamic Resistance in Iraq banner have repeatedly targeted U.S. assets during the ongoing conflict with Iran.
The strikes follow a reported explosion at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on Saturday, with outlets differing on whether a drone or a missile struck the complex, damaging a helipad and an air defense radar.
