Two people are dead after a plane crashed at a regional airport near Tucson, Arizona, according to police.

The crash happened at about 5:12 p.m. local time on Tuesday at the Marana Regional Airport, which is located northwest of Tucson at 11770 W. Avra Valley Road. Marana Police said officers responded after receiving reports of a downed aircraft.

Preliminary information indicates that the two people aboard the plane were pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they had not yet been identified.

Dan Marries, news anchor at KOLD, said Marana Mayor Ed Honea told him the plane went off the runway and burst into flames. Police said no other aircraft were involved in the incident.

It was not immediately clear what type of aircraft was involved or whether it was arriving or departing when the crash happened.

Marana Police said it was leading the initial investigation before turning the case over to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which investigates civil aviation accidents in the United States. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
