1 dead, 4 injured including 3-year-old in Louisiana apartment shooting
One person has died and four others, including a 3-year-old child, were injured in a shooting at an apartment complex in southeastern Louisiana, according to officials. Investigators said the 26-year-old man who was killed is believed to have been one of at least two shooters.
The shooting happened Thursday at about 11:45 a.m. on Willow Villa Road in the Hammond area, according to Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Gerald Sticker. Hammond is located about 45 miles northwest of New Orleans.
“At about 11:45 today that’s when we got the first 911 call about a disturbance involving gunfire,” Sticker said. “Five people were shot, we have one of those deceased, that’s a 26 year old male.”
Sticker said the other four victims, including a 3-year-old, were hospitalized with injuries ranging from stable to critical condition. He said the victims were “basically hit as collateral damage” during the exchange of gunfire between the two shooters.
“We have identified at least two shooters,” Sticker said. “We are looking to confirm whether or not there was a third individual involved.”
Sticker said investigators believe the 26-year-old man who died was one of the shooters and that a second suspected gunman is in custody.
“The incident involves a disturbance that went from a verbal argument to physical altercation to ultimately gunplay,” he said. “Both parties knew each other. We don’t know the relationship of those two parties.”
Sticker said the gunfire took place in the middle of the street near a driveway. A residence about five houses away was also involved, and investigators found evidence suggesting a third gun may have been used.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active and asked anyone with information to contact its Criminal Investigations Office at 985-902-2088.
